What"s Surrogacy

Gestational surrogacy is the procedure whereby a woman – the gestational surrogate – consents to a embryo transfer process, otherwise called an IVF Procedure. During this technique, an embryo (or plural embryos) deriving from the couple obtaining the surrogacy service is implanted in the surrogate. If the procedure is successful, the surrogate becomes impregnated with the child of the couple (the expected parents). The level of participation with the surrogate thereafter is completely up to the intended parents – typically, the couple is involved with the initial IVF treatments, and being present at the point of labor and birth of their child. They then take responsibility for the child post-delivery and make the long term transition to legal parenthood.

What"s IVF

IVF is an option women choose opt for when they are experiencing problems with infertility. The traditional IVF involves removing the human oocytes from the ovaries and the fertilization process, achieved by “letting" motile spermatozoa to fertilize the oocytes into a special culture medium. Which means that once embryos are produced, they are transferred in to the uterine cavity through a process called Embryo Transfer. IVF is used to mimic the biological functions, in vivo.

IVF is used for women who have blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, thus stopping the egg and sperm from meeting naturally. IVF also may help you and your spouse if your infertility is unexplained and/or the male spouse has a minimal sperm count. Other factors like mature age endometriosis, immunology, excess weight and mindset may lead people to infertility. IVF could be the option for you if these factors enter into play at this stressful time in your lives.

IVF Timeline

Step 1: Follicular Development and Monitoring

During a woman"s normal menstrual period, LH and FSH are the hormones that the body uses to activate development and maturation of a single oocyte. In order to optimize your pregnancy rates during IVF, it"s important to severa tmature oocyte available for fertilization, embryo development and transfer into the uterus. The ovaries are therefore activated using higher levels of the stimulating hormone that normally exist within you. This is achieved using Gonadotrophin injections. Numerous stimulation regimes exist at the moment, and the doctor chooses the one best suited to your biological system, to be able to achieve a great number of high quality oocytes. Close monitoring of the follicles (the sacs that contain the growing oocytes in the ovaries) is necessary and it is achieved with recurrent ultra-sound to be able to ascertain their size and their quantities. At the correct timing, more hormones will be administered, aiding with the ultimate maturation of the oocytes. Predicated by all the available reviews and laboratory studies, the best time for the restoration will be decided.

Step 2: Oocyte Recovery

This is the procedure where the doctor collects the oocytes of the womain’s body, a procedure needing anesthesia. A small needle enters the upper portion of the vagina, through the guidance of the ultrasound, into the ovary"s follicles. The liquid that is aspirated will then be taken to the lab, where the oocytes will be identified and transferred into culture media inside an incubator at 37oC to continue the maturation process for a few more hours.

Step 3: Fertilization of OOCYTS

In this step, your partner must give his sample of sperm on the day of the oocyte restoration which will be preserved until needed). His sperm will be carefully made ready with a special technique and the healthy spermatozoa separately. There are about 100,000 motile spermatozoa added per oocyte, with 4-6 hours after oocyte restoration. This is for the fertilization to take place within the following 12-18 hours in the incubator. The insemination process will lead to the fertilization of the oocytes, and resulting embryos are transferred to different culture media to be viewed closely over the next 48 hours.

Step 4: Embryo Transfer

The best embryos are chosen and are transferred through the neck of the womb using a small catheter on the basis of their rate of development and morphology. The number of embryos which will be transferred is set according to the age and medical history of the potential mother; alongside the number and quality of the embryos that have been released during each therapy cycle. For every couple, there"s a possibility of experiencing more than one child. Embryo transfer is a pain-free technique, much like having a cervical smear, and thankfully takes just a few minutes. After the process has been completed, we recommend a short resting period in the recovery room. One day after, oocyte retrieval progesterone and other supplements will be given to ensure that the lining of the uterus receives sufficient activation and sustains the implantation of the embryos. Quantitative pregnancy tests with blood also needs to be svheduled 12-14 days after embryo transfer.
